Duck eggs incubate export markets
Salted duck eggs have found healthy export markets in the Southeast Asian region, but sales are also up domestically as they are used for making traditional cakes ahead of the Mid-Autumn Festival.
Many duck egg businesses in the Cuu Long (Mekong) Delta region have reported that they have been unable to keep up with demand, as export volumes have increased some 30 per cent over the same period last year.
"Producers of salted duck eggs in the region are extremely busy export contracts," said Nguyen Huu Phuoc, director of the Nguyen Phan Co in the southern city of Can Tho, noting that his business had secured orders to supply 9 million eggs a year to Singapore and 800,000 eggs a year to Hong Kong.
The eggs were also shipped to Cambodia, he said, with Nguyen Phan and another company in the southern province in Vinh Long Province together exporting about 50 million eggs a year to this country.
"Despite the global recession, demand had not dropped, as they are an essential ingredient in the making of mooncakes, a special dish in many Asian countries during the Mid-Autumn Festival," said Phuoc.
The country’s leading commmercial baker, Kinh Do, had ordered 12 million eggs from Nguyen Phan Co, a 20 per cent increase over 2008, he noted.
Since the bird flu epidemic was brought under control in the middle of last year, duck flocks in the Delta have grown considerably, with the region now boasting of about 33 million ducks which are raised following strict quarantine regulations, monitored by local veterinary agencies.
Because of the strict quality control, the prices of Vietnamese duck eggs in Singapore are reportedly 20 per cent higher than those imported from other countries.
