Rice prices remain low

Farmers in the Mekong River Delta have harvested more than 1.6 million tonnes of rice from an area of 1.2 million ha, equal to an average productivity rate of 5 tonnes per ha.

However, rice prices are still low as the consumer demand is plummeting. Freshly-harvested rice range between VND2,800 and 3,100 per kilo and dried rice costs 3,400-3,800 per kilo. At this price, local farmers can make only a moderate profit because of high investment costs.

The export price for 5 percent and 15-25 percent broken rice in Can Tho and An Giang provinces hovers VND5,100 and VND5,000 respectively.

Rice sales to 21 members of the Vietnam Food Association are slowing down as they have nearly fulfill their target of 400,000 tonnes.
