Investors flock to agriculture park
HCM City’s first hi-tech agriculture park in Cu Chi District is still under construction but it has already been fully leased by investors, according to its management.
The first phase of the State-owned Sai Gon Agriculture Incorporation’s 88-hectare park will be finished next month when 56ha will become available.
Tran Phuoc Dung, head of the VND80 billion (US$4.7 million) project, said: "The total area that 16 investors have registered to lease exceeds the available area."
Five investors have received licences to grow high-quality vegetables and other crops and produce crop seeds on a total of 28ha, he said.
Huynh Doan Thong, director of the Chanh Phong Agriculture Company, said his company is already growing several crops, including vegetables, bitter lemon, cucumber, chilly, and tomato in the park.
It also plans to invest VND9 billion ($520,000) to produce high-quality vegetable seeds.
At a meeting with park managers last week, the chairwoman of the city People’s Council, Pham Phuong Thao, said they should license projects that offer high value addition but require little land.
She urged them to complete the construction on schedule to attract more investors, especially foreign, who will bring advanced technologies to create high-quality crop and livestock strains.
The park would also help provide training to farmers from the city and elsewhere in growing high-quality crops using advanced technologies, she said.
In March this year Le Hoang Quan, chairman of the city People’s Committee, instructed the Sai Gon Agriculture Incorporation and Cu Chi District authorities to make plans to set up two or three more such parks to meet investors’ demand.
