Clothing sector hopes to expand ties to South American market

The textile and garment industry is counting on strengthening links with South American nations as a key part of efforts to almost double export turnover by 2015.

Towards this, the heads of 14 enterprises completed a 10-day visit to Chile and Argentina on Wednesday. The visit was part of a trade promotion programme implemented by the Viet Nam Textile and Apparel Association (Vitas).

The Vietnamese delegation visited production factories, importers and distributors in the garment sector of the two South America countries. They also participated in the Buenos Aires Moda Fashion Fair in Argentina.

They also took part in seminars discussing co-operation opportunities in the textile and garment sector between Viet Nam and the two South American countries.

Le Van Dao, Deputy Chairman of Vitas and head of the delegation, introduced the Vietnamese apparel sector at the seminars, noting that it accounted for more than 10 per cent of Viet Nam’s industrial ouput.

The export value of the Viet Nam textile and garment sector was US$9.13 billion last year, 17.8 per cent higher than 2007, accounting for 15 per cent of the country’s total exports, he said.

Vitas hopes to double the export target to $18 billion by 2015.

The sector has become the second largest export earner for the country and could reach the top this year, according to Dao.

In order to meet the target, Vitas is giving priority to expanding and promoting trade in new export markets, including South America, he said.

The representative of Argentina’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Trade, Jorge Martinez Celaya, appreciated Viet Nam’s achievements in economic development and integrating further into the global economy.

He emphasised that Viet Nam and Argentina should increase information exchange towards strengthening economic ties.

Officials and businesses of Argentina and Chile expressedtheir confidence that the visit would increase co-operation in the garment sector between Viet Nam and the two South American nations.

Viet Nam’s exports to Chile and Argentina last year reached $13 million and $11,2 million, respectively, according to Vitas.
