80,000 tonnes of pepper exported in seven months

According to the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPA), the country exported over 80,000 tonnes of pepper in the first 7 months of 2009, earning US$186 million.

The association has warned exporters to keep a close watch on price movements on the global market so they sell pepper at highest prices. Businesses should also improve quality, offer a wider range of products, and ensure food and hygiene standards.

There are about 25,000 tonnes of pepper to export in the last 5 months of 2009, say VPA sources. Pepper is now being sold at VND40,000 per kilo, VND3,500 higher than it was at the end of July.

The prices of pepper are estimated to see a slight rise or remain unchanged until the end of the year.
