No toxic chemicals in Vietnam’s catfish

According to the UAE’s Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority’s analysis, no cancer-related or toxic chemicals have been detected in tra and basa catfish imported from Vietnam.

The authority said UAE businesses can continue importing from their Vietnamese partners.

However, the Vietnamese embassy in the UAE has warned the Ministry of Industry and Commerce about the UAE’s close observation on the consumption of Vietnam’s tra and basa catfish. They have also demanded a certification that products are Malachite Green-free.

The Ministry of Industry and Commerce has asked the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural development to create better conditions for licensing procedures.

The UAE imported more than 6.5 million tonnes of seafood from Vietnam in the first quarter of 2009.
