Transport firms threaten to raise transport fees on petrol price hike

Right after petrol distributors raised petrol prices yesterday, June 10, the Vietnam Vehicle Transport Association announced it would follow suit.

“We lack confidence in petrol distribution companies. Government inspectors need to jump in and inspect the production costs of petrol distribution,” said Chairman of the Vietnam Vehicle Transport Association Nguyen Manh Hung.

Hung also said that transport firms would raise fees due to the petrol price increases.

“The new petrol prices represent a 20 percent increase in comparison with three months ago, while the diesel price has increased by 14 percent. Previously, when fuel prices increased a little, the association advised its member companies not to hurry to raise transport fees immediately, as petroleum prices always fluctuate. They should only consider adjusting fees when fuel prices increase or decrease by more than 10 percent,” he said.

According to him, as petrol prices have increased by 20 percent, petrol-run vehicles (taxi) will see expenses increase by 10 percent, while diesel-run vehicles (trucks, passenger vehicles) seven percent.

Hung said that transport firms have to go through complicated procedures to raise transport fees, though the state does not control transport fees. Enterprises have to get permission for raising fees from relevant ministries, print new tickets and adjust taxi meters.

Meanwhile, Deputy Director of Hanoi Coach Station Management Board Nguyen Cong Bang said on June 10 in the afternoon that no transport firm had responded to the petrol price increase move yet. “The transport fee increases, if occurring, will take place in some days,” Bang said.

The Ministries of Finance and Industry and Trade on June 10 decided to raise petrol prices by 1,000 dong per litre. However, the price increases have not satisfied petrol distributors. Dang Vinh Sang, General Director of Saigon Petro, said that the price increase is just enough to help enterprises reduce losses.
