Officials train to spot imitation goods
To improve their capacity to fight the sale and use of counterfeit products and violations of intellectual property rights, 100 market watch officers in Ha Noi and HCM City are receiving additional training this week.
The Agence Française de Development, Co-operation and Cultural Affairs Department and the Department of Market Watch are running a week-long course on intellectual property and fake goods.
The five-day course, part of a programme sponsored by the French Government, will update officers on international regulations and punishments on counterfeit and fake products.
International and domestic experts from customs and police are sharing their experiences on recognising and discovering illegal goods, said Hoang Minh Tuan, deputy director of the Department for Market Watch, the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
He said Viet Nam had about 5,000 market watch officers who needed more training to improve their skills, especially at unearthing intellectual property right violations, which require knowledge of advanced technology.
Christian Levon, a senior official from the Economic Service at the French Embassy, said the training would enhance knowledge on intellectual property right and help officers uncover fake goods and those making and trading the products.
Levon said the Vietnamese legal system on intellectual property rights was up to date with international law but the country needed stronger punishments for violations.
Officers would also be sent to France for three training courses with their French counterparts who are more familiar with the work, said Tuan.
They would share their knowledge and experience with fellow officers on their return.
Tuan said officers need more information on technology so they could deal with counterfeit goods sold on the internet.
Market watch data for last year showed Viet Nam uncovered 3,000 cases of intellectual property right violations among more than 5,500 cases of trading and producing counterfeit and low-quality products.
