Hanoi discourages golf course construction

Hanoi will not encourage businesses to invest in golf courses in the city as these projects occupy large amounts of land, the Municipal Party Committee concluded recently.

The committee asked the municipal administration to examine the implementation of existing golf course projects and evaluate their socio-economic efficiency and environmental impact as well as the feasibility of each project so as to decide which projects continue.

It requested that the administration halt projects to be built on agricultural land and especially in populous and sensitive areas affecting land clearance and the dyke system. The administration was also asked to allocate land for golf projects in various areas in the city properly.

The city proposed that the government lay down specific criteria for golf course projects to be applied across the country.

At the recent National Assembly session, Minister of Planning and Investment Vo Hong Phuc said that Hanoi has 19 such projects, of which only 9 have met the criteria.
