Energy demand outstrips sources
Demand for energy is increasing by 10-20 per cent per year to drive the nation’s rapid economic growth, but traditional sources of energy like oil, gas and coal are quickly being exhausted, making an effective energy policy key to sustainable development, according to Ha Noi Energy Conservation Centre director Dao Hong Thai.
Power shortages, especially during the dry season, have had negative impacts on production, livelihoods of people, and overall economic growth.
"Domestic companies might switch to energy-saving technologies to boost production and improve their competitiveness," Thai said.
To raise the awareness of individuals and enterprises on these issues and create favourable conditions for them to access and apply new and environmentally friendly technologies, the centre has organised an international fair and exhibition on energy efficiency and the environment, in co-operation with the Ha Noi Trade Promotion Centre, the Global Expo and Event Joint Stock Co, and South Korea’s Busan Exhibition and Convention Centre.
Called Entech Ha Noi 2009, the event will take place at the Giang Vo Exhibition Centre in Ha Noi from June 18 to 21.
Expected to attract 150 foreign and domestic firms, including companies from South Korea, mainland China, India and Taiwan, the expo will feature 250 stalls on a total area of 15,000sq.m, displaying equipment and technology in areas of recycling, energy, transportation, consulting and the environment.
During the expo, organisers will also host seminars on energy conservation and the environment, South Korean firms with energy-saving ideas and Ministry of Industry and Trade policies on energy conservation.
