China-made goods rejected, Vietnam-made goods back in

As many Vietnamese consumers have turned their backs on China-made goods, Vietnam-made goods are increasing in popularity.

No more room for China-made goods

Dong Xuan wholesale market in Hanoi, the biggest provider of clothes and fabric in the north, on June 3 was quiet with very few visitors. The first floor, for adult clothes, and the second floor, for children’s clothes and fabric, both were deserted.

Lan, the owner of a children’s clothing shop on the second floor of Dong Xuan Market, said that visitors nowadays do not ask for China-made clothes. Loyal clients still purchase goods for resale regularly, but in decreasing volumes.

Ly, the owner of Xuan Noi Clothing Shop in Dong Anh district in Hanoi, said that after hearing the news about China’s toxic clothes, she now only sells Vietnamese and Thai products. Ly said China-made products are very cheap, but she fears she will not be able to sell the items.

Hoa, the owner of a children’s fashion shop on Nguyen Luong Bang street, said that her sales had dropped by a half as people now do not purchase China-made goods anymore.

The age of Vietnam-made goods

While petty merchants have reported sharp decreases in sales of Chinaese goods, domestic producers have reported sharp increases in sales of domestically-made products.

Ngo Thi Bau, Director of Nguyen Tam Company Ltd, the owner of Foci trademark, said the volume of products registered for purchase by sales agents and wholesalers had increased by three-fold since the news about formaldehyde in China-made clothes was announced.

Bau said that the increase in the number of orders showed that consumers have become more cautious when choosing goods. “This proves to be the growing trend, as consumers have become more and more fastidious,” Bau said.

Tran Thanh Sang, Managing Director of Viet Fashion Company, said that it is now a golden opportunity for Vietnamese producers to take up the domestic market.

Sang said that a series of shops of the company’s distribution chain have asked to provide more products as the current supply is not enough to meet the demand.

Salesmen of N&M, Foci, Viet Thy, Nino Maxx and F-House trademark products all say that they have seen sharp increases in the numbers of buyers in the last week.

However, Sang said that domestic producers have to find the right way to convince domestic consumers to use domestically-made products. He said that low prices helped Chinese goods once dominate the market. Therefore, in order to conquer the market, domestic producers have to provide cheap products.

“Producers need to join forces in the value chain and distribution chain to force down production costs. Only by doing so will domestic producers be able to expand their market shares,” Sang said.
