Work starts on country’s first methane gas project

Work began on the nation’s first methane project at the Nam Son landfill in Hanoi’s Soc Son District Wednesday.

The facility will extract methane from trash at the landfill and convert it into energy.

Methane released into the atmosphere is one of the major causes of the greenhouse effect.

The project expects to generate power in its second phase from 2010- 2015.

Chu Van Chung, general director of the Hanoi Urban Environment Company (Urenco), one of the project’s major investors, said revenues from the plant would be used for the capital city’s environmental protection programs offering job opportunities for local people.
