Northern region faces power cuts

The National Power Regulation Center has warned northern provinces that they will lack 200MW to 400MW of electrical power during hot days.

The centre cited the region's power-generating capacity, which will range from a mere 3,800-4,100MW for the second half of May to the first half of June.

In the coming dry season, the centre predicts that the northern region would continue to depend on a power supply from the central and southern regions that can supply a combined 715 million kWh in output.

During this period, the water level at Hoa Binh Reservoir will fall, with the northern region needing an estimated 1,530MW during the morning peak on the 500kV Da Nang-Ha Tinh transmission line from the southern and central regions.

Such a large transmission output can cause an overload on 500/220kV transformers in Nho Quan, Thuong Tin and Ha Tinh, according to the center.

The overload can be higher if one of Hoa Binh Reservoir's turbine clusters, the Pha Lai thermal power plant suffers a technical glitch.

Meanwhile, the national power grid during the second half of May and first half of June can produce between 12,800 and 13,200MW.

This is because a series of hydropower turbines are being repaired in preparation for the flood season and the water level becomes low at all reservoirs during the end of the dry season.

The centre has proposed commissioning on schedule such power plants as Uong Bi, Nhon Trach 1, Quang Ninh and Son Dong.

The Electricity of Viet Nam (EVN) Group was asked to speed up construction of transmission lines connecting the Ca Mau and Nhon Trach power plants to ensure that turbines can operate at full capacity.

The EVN must instruct the National Power Transmission Corporation to put the second 500kV transformer in Pleiku City in the Central Highlands to take full advantage of hydropower sources from the south-central region.

The State utility group was asked to work with the National Oil and Gas Group on the latter's possibility to supply gas for turbines at the Ca Mau power plant.

Power supply from Ca Mau plant will be able to meet electricity demand for the coming dry season and ensure the operation of the national power grid, the National Center for Power Regulation has said.

Power purchases from China will also be recommended, with a proposed output of 375 million kWh this month.

The output is expected to increase to 675 million kWh during the remaining dry months of the year.
