Vietnam’s coffee output to drop after heavy rain, US says

Vietnam’s annual coffee production will decline 6.8 percent in the year starting Oct. 1 after heavy rain during the blossoming period damaged flowers, the US Department of Agriculture’s Foreign Agricultural Service said.

Output in the country, the world’s second-largest coffee producer, will fall to 18.3 million bags from an estimated 19.7 million this year, the service said in a report posted on the USDA website Friday. The current harvest was estimated at 7.3 percent more than the previous year after acreage increased.

Exports next year will drop 1.6 percent to 18.5 million bags, the service said. Shipments this year were forecast at 18.8 million, a 16 percent jump from last year, the report said.

Brazil is the world’s leading coffee supplier. A bag weighs 132 pounds, or 60 kilograms.
