Human resources strategies are key

Manpower is a decisive factor in the success of any enterprise, so a suitable human resources strategy must be developed to deal with the current economic crisis, experts said yesterday.

Executives of Netviet Ltd Co, which specialises in human resources consultancy, presented ideas on human resources solutions during the economic crisis at a seminar held in the city by the company in co-operation with the Viet Nam Chamber of Commerce and Industry.

During the slowdown period, key elements of a human resources strategy would include building adequate remuneration, rewards and welfare systems as well as systems to evaluate the effectiveness of employees, they said.

Tran Dinh Phuc, director of Netviet, said companies should check their business processes, organisational structure, human resources and management to make appropriate adjustments.

Enterprises attending the seminar also shared their experiences in amending their HR strategies.

Nguyen Minh Chanh, HR director of the Hoa Sen Company that specialises in distributing steel sheets across the country said laying off employees was not the first solution that his company applied in response to the global crisis.

The company overcame the most difficult period by taking time to analyse the business to reduce administrative costs, including telephones, electricity and use of water in manufacturing.

It also implemented measures to reduce work-hours and salaries, with the commitment that they would revert to normal as soon as the crisis is over, he added.

My Yen, a representative of the Siam Cement Group (SCG) said companies should stimulate creativity and working capacity of staff to improve their performance.

Besides, the companies should seek to diversify products. For example, companies could focus on exploiting the local market instead of exports, she said.

Netviet Company is among the first Vietnamese HR companies that has bagged many multinational clients including Prudential, Unilever, P&G, Motorola, Johnson and Johnson and Pepsi. It is currently offering a promotion of free HR consultancy for enterprises until June.
