Dien Bien Phu set to boost economic growth

The Party Committee, local authorities and people of the north-western province of Dien Bien Phu are determined to boost economic growth, eradicate hunger, reduce poverty and create a new image for the province.

Under the leadership of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh, on May 7, 1954, the Party Committee, armed forces and people of Dien Bien along with the people nationwide achieved the Great Victory at Dien Bien Phu.

Thanks to State funds and resources from local residents and enterprises, Dien Bien Phu City has been developed and expanded in recent years. Residential areas now have streets named after Heroes from the Dien Bien Phu Campaign like Lo Van Hac, Tran Can and To Vinh Dien.

The province has been undergoing a transition from agriculture and forestry to industry, construction and services. At present, agriculture and forestry accounts for 38.4 percent of the province’s GDP, industry and construction 26 percent, and services 35.6 percent.

In recent years, the province has maintained a high economic growth rate: 8.3 percent from 2001-05 and 10.87 percent from 2006-08.

The province’s agricultural production value has also risen by 5 percent a year. The provincial authorities have paid particular attention to developing cash crops like coffee, tea and rubber. It has also created a better business environment for developing hydro-electricity, building cement plants, producing construction materials and mining.

Last year, 100 percent of communes and wards in the province received vaccines and 95 percent of all children were vaccinated.

The province creates an average of 6,000 new jobs for workers each year and last year 7,500 people found jobs.

The rate of households living on or below the poverty line fell from 44.6 percent in 2005 to 29.9 percent last year. The province has also implemented a campaign to encourage families and villages to adopt healthy lifestyles, have no social vices and commit no crimes. By the end of last year, almost 54,000 families were recognised as cultured families. As many as 570 villages have achieved the title, an increase of 2.68 percent over 2005.

In 2005, the province had 444 Party cells with 17,000 members. Today there are 512 Party cells with more than 21,000 members.

Dien Bien province shares its borders with Laos and China. In an area of 9,563 sq.km, the province is home to 459,000 residents from 21 ethnic groups.
