Ministry raises import taxes on meat, poultry
The Ministry of Finance (MoF) has raised import tariffs on most meat and poultry products starting on March 20 to protect domestic production, according to a new circular issued by the ministry.
Under Circular 52.2009/TT-BTC, import duty on fresh beef saw the highest increase, from 17 percent to 33 percent. The duty on frozen beef was also raised to 20 percent from 17 percent.
The new rate for fresh pork will be 28 percent against 24 percent previously. Duty for frozen pork will be 24 percent.
Pork, beef, lamb, mutton, goat and horse by-products will be levied a rate between 10 and 15 percent depending on type.
This tariff hike is the second for meat and poultry products in recent months. The MoF first increased the rate by roughly 2 percent in October last year.
Domestic production was previously unable to meet local demand, resulting in reductions of import tariffs on meat and poultry products prior to the deadline set by the World Trade Organisation.
The circular also announces that the MoF has cut import taxes on dried vegetable used as animal feed to 10 percent from the previous 13 percent. It also decided to exempt import taxes on whey, a product used in the dairy and food production industry, previously imposed with a 2 percent tax.
