China to scrutinise agricultural imports

Viet Nam will provide China with a list of entrepreneurs that process cassava starch for food and industrial purposes, as well as those who produce cassava slices, this month.

The list is being given under an agreement signed in January this year that will have fresh agricultural produce exported to China put through a more stringent quality control process.

Signatories to the agreement were the Department of Quality Management of Agriculture, Forestry and Aquaculture Products under Viet Nam’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and China’s National Quality Inspection and Quarantine Department.

The exported products will also have to be packed well, with the packaging clearly mentioning the details of the place of origin, date of processing, and of other quality specifications.

Chinese experts will visit Viet Nam this month and the next to conduct a survey for planting, processing and producing cassava slices and starch for export. They will also inspect enterprises that have exported cassava products to China during this period.

As for July 1, fresh fruits like watermelon, longan, lychee, banana and dragon fruit slated for export to China will need certificates of origin from the orchards.

The fruits should also be packed by registered packaging manufacturers. The list of orchards and packaging manufacturers will be given to China which will also supply the Vietnamese partners with similar details.

Some market observers say that while China remains a market with high potential for export of Vietnamese agricultural products, the new agreement will make it more difficult for exporters of agricultural produce to meet the new conditions.
