Saigon Co.op opens store in Ben Tre
Saigon Co.op, Vietnam’s leading retail store chain operator, on Saturday opened a new supermarket in the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre as part of its nationwide expansion plan.
The new store stocks more than 20,000 items and covers some 6,500 square meters at 26A Tran Quoc Tuan Street in Ben Tre town of the province.
Saigon Co.op and a venture between Saigon Co.op and Saigon Co.op Investment Development Joint Stock Co. (SCID) have invested VND60 billion in the two-story retail store. Saigon Co.op alone owns 60% of the store.
This is one of the four which Saigon Co.op plans to open this month. The other three are Co.opMart Buon Ma Thuot in the Central Highlands province of Daklak; and two in HCMC – Co.opMart Tuy Ly Vuong and Co.opMart Pham Van Hai, with each costing VND35 billion to VND60 billion.
Branching out to other parts of the country is aimed at preparing Saigon Co.op for the competition that will arise when Vietnam opens up the retail market to foreign companies in line with the World Trade Organization’s rules early next year, according to Saigon Co.op.
Saigon Co.op now has 30 outlets. In a business development strategy until 2015, it will raise the number of its Co.opMart supermarkets to 100, and will expand its operations to the property sector, such as operating shopping centers, and office and apartment buildings.
On the same day, the State-owned book distributor Fahasa opened a new bookstore inside the premises of Co.opMart Ben Tre, bring the total throughout the country to 36.
The over VND10 billion bookshop has over 30,000 books in Vietnamese and foreign languages available.
