Amendments needed for Fisheries Law

The issuance of the Law on Fisheries has promoted investment, business operations and economic structuring, said participants in a seminar in Hanoi on Dec. 23.

Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Luong Le Phuong, stressed the need to pen amendments and supplements to some articles of the Law so that it can be fully enforced.

During the seminar, delegates contributed a number of ideas to the law, regarding the registration of fishing vessels, as well as the allocation and revocation of water surface for aquaculture.

The Law on Fisheries was approved on November 26, 2003 and came into effect on July 1, 2004, covering all activities relating to aquaculture and marine exploration, seafood development and preservation, fishing vessel management, seafood processing, and seafood import-export.

However, there have been certain shortcomings in the implementation of the law, the assessment of aquaculture resources and meeting the needs of the fisheries sector.
