Oil spills arouse Gov’t concerns

The Prime Minister on October 17 sent an urgent message to all relevant agencies to ask for prompt measures to be taken against oil spills caused by a wrecked ship carrying Panama flag over the water surface of the central coastal province of Phu Yen since early this month.

Immediately later in the day, the Vietfacht-Qui Nhon sent an oil-pumping ship from the Vu Anh Hung company to the site, removing 200 tonnes of FO oil and 25 tonnes of DO oil from the wrecked ship by 3 pm in the day. The removal accounted for over 46 percent of the oil volume that is threatening to spread out to the sea. It is expected that an additional 480 tonnes of oil will be pumped out of the wrecked ship by late tonight to prevent them from spilling out.

Vietfacht-Qui Nhon Director Pham Duong Tung revealed a plan to send two freighters with 1,500 and 3,000 tonnages to the site to remove 10,150 tonnes of iron ores aboard the wreckage before tugging it to the Quy Nhon port in the central coastal province of Binh Dinh for fixing.

The wrecked ship named New Oriental with 29 Chinese crewmen aboard was carrying 11,500 tonnes of iron ores en route from Thailand to China at the time it hit cliffs when entering the sea water off Phu Yen province on October 2 for storm shelters.

The ship had an engine and two holds damaged.

Having received signals for help from the ship, the Quy Nhon seaport sent rescue forces to join with border-guards and fishermen from Phu Yen province in the rescue operations. Before the rescue had to be stopped on October 9 due to weather conditions, the rescue forces had managed to transport 1,350 tonnes of iron ores from the wrecked ship on shore.
