Economic zones to enrich the country’s coast

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has approved a plan to develop 15 coastal economic zones by 2020, aiming to attract more investment to poor seaside provinces.

The zones will spread from Quang Ninh Province in the north to Ca Mau Province in the south, according to the plan.

Detailed investment plans and finance proposals for 13 zones from Quang Ninh to the southern province of Kien Giang are expected to be completed by 2010. Plans for the zones in the southern provinces of Tra Vinh and Ca Mau will be drawn up later.

Four main zones – Van Don in Quang Ninh, Vung Ang in Ha Tinh, Van Phong in Khanh Hoa and Phu Quoc in Kien Giang – will focus on increasing trade with other Asian economies.

The government has asked the Ministry of Planning and Investment and provincial authorities to expedite the process of attracting investment to the economic zones, which are expected to account for 15-20 percent in the country’s gross domestic product and create jobs for about 1.3 million to 1.5 million people in 2020.
