Vietnam aims to be one of world’s five largest garment exporters

To achieve the target the garment sector plans to grow 40,000ha of cotton in central coastal provinces and part of the Central Highland region.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Trade Bui Xuan Khu said that Vietnam will become one of the world’s five largest garment exporters by 2015 if the country maintains current production and export growths. The country is now among top ten garment producers and exporters.

Garment and Textile Group (Vinatex) and other garment companies will invest around VND6,500 billion in cotton growing and complex fibre production. In addition, Vinatex will work with Vietnam Oil and Gas Group (PetroVietnam) to build the first polyester fibre production plant in Vietnam with a daily capacity of 400 tonnes of common fibre, 50 tonnes of special fibre and 50 tonnes of chip particles. Built at a cost of VND3,000 billion, the plant is expected to begin operation in 2011.
