Dutch businesses urged to invest in Vietnam
Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Khiem has called on Dutch businesses to invest in Vietnam , particularly in hi-tech manufacturing, infrastructure, environmental protection, health care, agriculture and coping with climate change.
Khiem, who doubles as Minister of Foreign Affairs, made the appeal at the Netherlands-Vietnam Business Forum held in The Hague on Sept. 19 as part of celebrations to mark the 35th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
The deputy PM noted that in the 17th century, Dutch merchants and sailors arrived at the Hoi An international commercial port, opening up trade ties between Vietnam and the Netherlands .
Khiem said he hoped that the bilateral multifaceted cooperation, especially economic, trade and investment relations, will be maintained and strengthened to bring concrete and practical benefits to both nations.
Representatives of the Netherlands business circle expressed their desire to start up or increase investment in Vietnam by enquiring into the country’s investment environment and legal system as well as its telecom and energy development.
Vietnam-Netherlands economic, trade and investment ties have developed constantly over the past 35 years. In particular, the Netherlands has become one of Vietnam ’s leading partner in the European Union in the last decade.
Two-way trade value increased 15 times to reach 1.7 billion USD last year from just 110 million USD in 1999. By the end of July, the Netherlands poured a total of 2.6 billion USD into Vietnam , ranking 12th among 81 countries and territories and top the list of 17 EU nations investing in the country.
The forum drew the participation of representatives from more than 100 local businesses.
