Vinh Long asked to push up industrial development
State President Nguyen Minh Triet has asked southern Vinh Long province to further administrative reform, improve investment environment and boost human resources training so as to accelerate its industrial development.
While working with local authorities on August 22 as part of his tour of the Mekong delta, the state leader said along with industrial development, the province should pay more attention to building rural areas, improve living conditions for farmers and push up poverty reduction.
A target of a nine-percent poverty rate set by the province is unsustainable as the number of households close to poverty line remains high, the President said.
He also requested that the province focus on resolving difficulties for rice exporters and catfish farmers as they have been hard hit by socio-economic difficulties in the first six months of this year.
The state president, who is also the head of the Central Steering Committee for Judicial Reform, urged the local judicial sector to actively participate in fighting corruption and focus on training personnel, considering these as important factors to help increase the efficiency of judicial activities.
Vinh Long chalked an economic growth rate of more than 13.2 percent last year, with per capita income standing at 10.67 million VND a year, 1.66 million VND a year higher than 2006, according to Chairman Pham Van Dau of the provincial People Committee.
The province registered an increase of nearly 5 percent in agro-forestry and aquatic production value and over 37 percent in industrial and construction value during the year.
However, its export value felt short of the yearly target due to difficulties in rice exports and its service growth dwindled by 1.85 percent from the previous year.
