Vietnam-Japan Joint Initiative enters third phase
The Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI), the Japanese Embassy in Hanoi and the Japanese Businesses Association have held a meeting to draft an action plan for the third phase of the Vietnam-Japan Joint Initiative.
At the July 8 meeting, Japanese businesses focused on Vietnam ’s labour and tax policies and intellectual property rights in the context of high inflation and a multitude of labour issues. They also urged the country to further simplify customs procedures and distribution regulations, promote intellectual property protection and investment in power, transport and telecommunications development.
Representatives from both countries’ working groups recommended that the action plan should deal with policies and mechanisms, financial, accounting and tax policies, measures to deal with illegal strikes, wage regulations and personnel training and supply.
Director of the MPI’s Foreign Investment Department Phan Huu Thang said that Vietnam is working hard in preparation for the third phase of the Vietnam-Japan Joint Initiative. He said with joint efforts, hindrances to the investment environment will be removed to create favourable conditions for investors in general and Japanese businesses in particular to operate in the country.
He also said that his ministry will organise a meeting with foreign investors on existing obstacles in the investment disbursement process.
Launched by the two Governments in 2003, the Vietnam-Japan Joint Initiative is intended to improve Vietnam ’s investment environment and its competitiveness. The first phase was implemented from Dec. 2003 to Dec. 2005 and the second phase, from July 2006 to November 2007.
