Son La province: 49 hydro-power projects under construction
Forty-nine hydro-power projects totally capable of turning out 3,398 MW are under construction in northwestern mountainous Son La province.
They include four major projects, the 2,400 MW Son La project, the 520 MW Huoi Quang, the 200 MW Nam Chien No. 1 and the 32 MW Nam Chien No. 2 plants.
When put into operation between 2010 and 2011, these projects will not only help alleviate the country’s electricity shortage, but also contribute to boosting socio-economic development in Son La and other northwestern provinces.
Besides the four major projects, Son La province has licensed contractors to build 45 medium- and small-sized hydro power plants with a total capacity of 326 MW.
The Son La project alone, with six generators, is expected to increase the capacity of the Hoa Binh hydro power plant by 9.2 percent, and do a lot of good to the irrigation and flood prevention of Red River delta provinces.
Son La is planning to build 78 other small- and medium-sized hydro-power projects with a total of 33 MW with a view to own up to 127 hydro power plants and small stations capable of producing 3,509 MW by 2020.
According to experts, Son La has largest potential to develop hydro power among northern mountainous provinces.
