Localities urged to fulfill 5 million ha afforestation in 2006-2010
Ministries and localities nationwide should consider the 5 million ha afforestation in the 2006-2010 period a mandatory target focusing on areas designed to become protective and specialised forests.
Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai made the instruction at a meeting in Hanoi on July 30 with the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and relevant agencies to review and speed up the implementation of the 5 million ha afforestation project.
The Deputy PM asked localities to continue rearranging State-owned plantations, taking ineffective land areas back and stepping up the delivery of land and forests for economic sectors, households and community organisations.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development must pay attention to boosting technical transfer and breeding management, he said.
Localities were urged to balance the budget to focus on priority objectives and encourage economic sectors to involve in the work of afforestation.
Since the programme started in 2006, the country has delivered 2.3 million ha of forest land, regreened over 1 million ha and afforested over 581,000 ha each year with an annual investment capital of nearly 5 trillion VND (294 million USD).
