Vietnam, US build economic ties benefiting both sides
Vietnam and the United States are continuing to build economic bridges that benefit our economies and create new opportunities for citizens in both countries, said Commerce Assistant Secretary Israel Hernandez.
Hernandez, who will lead a trade mission of 14 American companies to visit Vietnam from June 16-20, told Washington-based Vietnam News Agency’s reporter on June 10 that the “mission participants are looking forward to doing business with their Vietnamese counterparts by offering some of the best and most innovative US products and services.”
The delegation will be comprised of US firms representing a cross section of US industries with commercial interests in Vietnam, including companies in sectors such as construction, environmental technologies, telecommunications, energy, franchising, and more.
During the five-day visit, the mission is scheduled to meet with senior officials from the Ministry of Planning and Investment, Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ministry of Information and Communications, and the Vietnamese Government’s Office.
The June trade mission is a follow up to US Commerce Secretary Carlos Gutierrez’ highly successful trade mission to Vietnam in November 2007.
Since the signing of the US-Vietnam Bilateral Trade Agreement in 2001, two-way trade has flourished, increasing from 1.5 billion USD to 12.5 billion USD last year - an eight-fold increase.
With a GDP of 68 billion USD, economic growth of 8 percent last year, and a population of 85 million that is young and consumer-oriented, American firms see excellent opportunities in Vietnam’s growing economy and new membership in the World Trade Organization (WTO), Hernandez said.
