Provinces must watch market

Attention needed to be paid to market management and speculation in Binh Thuan, Kon Tum, Bac Lieu and Ca Mau provinces and Can Tho City, Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung told leaders in the localities yesterday.

Dung said he appreciated the efforts of these areas in implementing socio-economic tasks in 2008.

The local leaders told the PM that they had exceeded targets in the first five months of this year and boosted living standards for poor people.

The PM asked chairs from the localities’ People’s Committees to strictly manage prices, especially of food and medicines. Local market watch officials and police had to increase inspections to strictly handle speculation.

He asked the leaders to complete socio-economic development tasks for the near future, to assure GDP growth of 7 per cent this year, control inflation and maintain the economy.

He asked ministries and sectors to co-operate with the localities to overcome difficulties and implement solutions synchronously.

Local leaders needed to focus on agricultural production and fisheries industries.

These areas had the right conditions to make good contributions to the GDP and assure social welfare, he said.

The PM asked the localities to help businesses boost production and exports and urged banks to assure capital supplies to enterprises in these areas.

The local leaders were urged to quickly implement effective projects that use State capital and Government bonds.

Regarding urgent construction projects, the PM asked the Ministry of Planning and Investment to earmark capital in 2009 to accelerate the rate of building work.

He asked the local leaders to care for poor people, boost administrative reform assure social order and traffic safety.

The Prime Minister also answered questions and proposals on investment in basic construction, financial policies and social welfare.

Petrol prices

In an effort to control petrol prices, Deputy Minister of Trade and Industry Nguyen Cam Tu said his ministry would revoke the business licences of petrol stations that halted petrol sales even for one day.

In the past few days four petrol stations in HCM City and 15 in Tien Giang Province temporarily stopped selling gasoline.

"This is not a serious problem as the country has a total of more than 10,000 petrol stations," Tu said, adding that if the market did not have any unusual changes, the Government would not raise the price of petrol.
