- In 1988: Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industry and Trade was established on the basis of separation from the State Bank.
- On December 25, 2008: Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industry and Trade successfully organized a public auction of shares and converted into a joint stock enterprise.
- On July 3, 2009: The State Bank signed Decision No. 14/GP-NHNN to establish and operate Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industry and Trade. Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Industry and Trade officially operated under the first business registration certificate No. 0103038874 issued by the Hanoi Department of Planning and Investment on July 3, 2009.
- On July 16, 2009: VietinBank's shares were officially listed and traded on HOSE with the trading code CTG.
- On January 25, 2011: VietinBank and the International Finance Corporation (IFC) of the World Bank signed investment cooperation agreements, IFC invested about USD 182 million USD to hold 10% of shares in VietinBank.
- On December 27, 2012: The strategic investment contract and comprehensive cooperation contract between VietinBank and Bank of Tokyo-Mitsubishi UFJ (BTMU) were officially signed. The signed contract brought VietinBank an amount of VND 15,465 billion, equivalent to 743 million USD with a selling price of VND 24,000/share. BTMU became a strategic investor, owning 20% of VietinBank's shares.
- In 2013: Issued purchase rights to existing shareholders at a rate of 14%, increasing charter capital to VND 37,234 billion.
- On July 21, 2021: Increase charter capital to VND 48,057,506,000,000.
- On January 8, 2024: Increase charter capital to VND 53,699,917,480,000.
