60 HCMC firms employ unauthorized foreigners: Labor department

An inspection of 200 companies in Ho Chi Minh City found 30 percent of them employing foreigners without work permits, the city’s Department of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs (DoLISA) said.

Its director Le Thanh Tam added that many people from Africa, who arrived in Vietnam as tourists, work part-time at companies.

The city has 10,305 foreigners with work permits, with monthly salaries ranging from US$300 to $4,000.

People’s Committee Chairman Le Hoang Quan said Thursday that efforts would be stepped up to punish illegal immigrants and other foreigners who break the law.

As part of this effort, DoLISA will examine companies that use foreign workers, and work together with the police to crack down on foreigners who break the law.
