After-Tet electronics market pales
The sales of electronics at home appliance centres have decreased by nearly 50% in the last two weeks, since they resumed operation after Tet. Traders fears that the market may be worse in 2009 and they have been trying to recover the market.
Customers maintain indifference
Very few customers are seeking to purchase electronics products these days, though shopping centres are trying to lure them by offering attractive sale promotion programs.
Dang Hoang Anh, Director of Consumer Products Sales Division, under a home appliance and furniture centre in district 3, HCM City, said that the purchasing power has decreased after Tet as people already purchased products before Tet.
“The commodity supplies have not become profuse, while producers have not launched new models, and therefore, there are not many buyers,” said Ngo Quang Vinh, Marketing Director of Ideas Home Appliance Centre.
Vinh added that LCD TVs, which were sold like hot cakes before Tet, now cannot find buyers, though sales promotion programs are still being offered to boost sales.
LCD TV buyers now are still enjoying the price discounts of VND 2-6 million (19 inch Sony LCD TVs are selling at VND 6 million instead of VND 9 million, while 32 inch TVs VND 18 million instead of VND 24 million, while buyers are given gifts worth VND 1 milllion).
Digital cameras with Samsung, Canon, Olympus and Kodak brand names, priced at VND 2-5 million/camera, were sold very well before Tet, but now cannot find buyers, though the sale prices remain unchanged.
Canon IXUS85IS 10 Mega pix camera is now offering at VND 5 million instead of VND 7 million, while Sony DSC-W110 7.2 Mega pix is at VND 4 million instead of VND 4.5 million.
Market will recover
When asked about the prospect of the electronics market in 2009, Hoang Anh, Director of Consumer Product Sales Division under Thien Hoa Home Appliance Centre said: “I still cannot say anything about the market this year.”
Other traders all were hesitant when asked to give predictions about the market performance, adding that they fear the global financial crisis will have a bad impact on the market.
In the immediate time, businessmen are still trying to boost sales with promotion programs.
Since the beginning of February, big home appliance centres in HCM City kicked off sales campaigns for the Valentine’s season, offering a lot of attractive gifts,. Nguyen Kim, a big retailer, has launched the program under which buyers can receive twin T-shirts. Thien Hoa and Ideal kicked off the Valentine’s season sales promotion program. The buyers of Sony’s Walkman music player will be given cinema tickets.
Pham Xuan Anh Thy, Head of Communications Division under Sony Electronics Vietnam, said that the manufacturer plans to market a series of new products to the market, from TV to digital cameras and computers, which will bring more choices to consumers.
