Maritime economy to contribute over 50 percent to GDP by 2020

Vietnam’s maritime economy is forecast to contribute 53 percent to GDP by 2020, affirmed the Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Pham Khoi Nguyen, at a conference on deploying the mission of the Vietnam Sea and Island General Department on December 26.

To carry out this task, the General Department should build a maritime strategy by 2020 and a vision for the future to exploit its huge potential at sea, in coastal areas and on islands, while ensuring national security, ownership of national territorial waters, protection of national sovereignty and contributing to socio-economic development.

The general department will focus on 5 tasks next year, such as adding highly-qualified staff, building an overall scheme on improving human resources, re-assessing the system of law-regulated documents concerning natural resources and the environment, adjusting and re-arranging the general department’s functions and authority.
