Main index starts new week at record high

Many bluechip stocks soaring sharply helped the benchmark VN-Index of the Hochiminh Stock Exchange hit its record high at over 1,260 points, April 19, with steel stocks stealing the limelight.

With up to 297 winners and 126 losers, the main index gained 21.87 points, or 1.77% against the previous session to finish at 1,260.58. Turnover on the southern bourse contracted over 17% in volume and over 8% in value at some 817 million shares and more than VND19.8 trillion. Shares traded in block deals contributed over VND1.4 trillion to the overall value.

Most of the stocks in the VN30 basket ended on an upbeat note, except for fuel distributor PLX, electricity firm POW, sugar maker SBT, and dairy firm VNM that closed with losses.

Among good performers in the basket, real estate company PDR and consumer goods company MSN surged 6.9% and 7%, respectively, with some 5-6 million shares changing hands.

Aside from PDR, other realty firms such as KDH and VHM rose 5.4% and 3.5%, respectively and their peer VIC reversed course to end higher at below 1%.

Bank stocks bounced back and mostly closed at their intraday highs, including VCB, TCB, BID, ACB, EIB.

Steel stocks, meanwhile, continued to extend gains after closing the morning phase in positive territory. Of them, HPG soared 5.9% to set a new high at VND57,800 with a matching volume exceeding 34.8 million shares. HSG added 3.5%, while POM and VIS stayed at their upper limits.

Meanwhile, among small and medium stocks, strong profit-taking drove many down. Construction firm ROS and property developer FLC in the FLC family dipped 4.7-5.4% with over 75 million shares and 43 million shares transacted, respectively.

On the northern bourse, the HNX-Index gained 2.64 points, or 0.9% versus last Friday to close at its intraday high at 295.75, with 101 stocks rising and 117 others declining. Bank stocks on the Hanoi market also staged outstanding performance, with SHB, NVB, BAB improving 0.6-3.9%. SHB led the northern bourse by liquidity with over 29.84 million shares transacted.
