Blue chip gains boost indices

Shares opened this week by making gains on both the national stock exchanges, boosted by blue chips and the property sector stocks.

On the HCM City Stock Exchange, despite the morning trading closing in the red, the VN-Index added 3.55 points or 0.67 per cent yesterday.

Many stocks of the property sector rose to their ceiling prices, such as the Tan Tao Group (ITA) which rose by 6.7 per cent; the FLC Group (FLC) which added 6 per cent; and the Hoang Quan Corporation (HQC) which gained 6.8 per cent.

The stocks of the property sector also led the southern bourse by trading volume yesterday. FLC ranked first with 12.7 million of its shares changing hands, followed by ITA and HQC.

Large-cap stocks were also the major supporters of the market yesterday. With 21 codes ending higher, the VN30-Index, tracking the southern bourse's top stocks by capitalisation and liquidity, advanced by 1.27 per cent to reach 589.31 points.

The Hoa Sen Group (HSG) too gained 6.9 per cent to end at its ceiling price of VND46,700, or US$2.2, yesterday after its management board asked the shareholders' opinions about increasing the foreign stake at the firm to 60 per cent.

The other big gainers included the Hoa Phat Group (HPG), Vingroup (VIC), the Southern Rubber Corporation (CSM), Vinamilk (VNM) and the Masan Group (MSN).

In the VN30 package, seven codes posted losses, including Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAG), the HCM City Infrastructure Investment Corporation (CII), Gemadept (GMD) and the Vinh Son Song Hinh Hydroelectric Corporation (VSH).

Foreign investors poured VND158.6 billion, or $7.5 million, into the HCM City Exchange yesterday, keeping their focus on the large-cap stocks.

Overall, on the southern bourse, there were 163 gainers and 68 losers. The trading volume reached 106.1 million shares, worth VND1.52 trillion, or $72.3 million.

On the Ha Noi Exchange, the HNX-Index gained 0.46 per cent to end at 72.64 points, while the HNXFF-Index, tracking stocks with a minimum free float rate of 5 per cent, added 0.47 per cent to close at 73.12 points.

Tracking the performance of the northern bourse' top stocks, the HNX30-Index advanced 0.8 per cent or 1.12 points to reach 142.09 points.

With more than 58.4 million shares being traded, the trading value reached VND484.9 billion, or $23 million.
