Stocks gain ground on fuel price cut

Vietnam’s benchmark VN-Index advanced for three consecutive trading sessions on June 7 as sentiment improved after the ministries of Finance, and Trade and Industry agreed to lower fuel prices.

The index which tracks 303 companies and five mutual funds listed on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange rocketed 1.88 per cent, or 8.02 points, to close at 434.41 points.

Of the index, 235 stocks climbed, 40 declined, while 33 remained unchanged.

Trading on the city bourse fell by 22 per cent in volume, and nearly 35 per cent in value over the previous trading session as more than 71.29 million shares changed hands at a total value of VND1.13 trillion.

Tan Tao Investment Industrial Joint Stock Company (ITA) topped the list of most active shares in volume with 5.4 million shares changing hands.

Sacom Development & Investment Corporation (SAM) was the runner-up with 2.66 million shares.

Saigon Securities Inc. (SSI) ranked third with 2.49 million shares traded.

Winners on the city bourse today included Bien Hoa Sugar Joint Stock Company (BHS), Da Nang Construction Building Materials & Cement Joint Stock Company (DXV), Ha Do Group Joint Stock Company (HDG), and Tai Nguyen Corporation (TNT).

Long Hau Corporation (LHG), and National Seed Joint Stock Company (NSC) shed 5 per cent to close at VND15,200, and VND39,900 respectively.

NBB Investment Corporation (NBB) tumbled 4.97 per cent to close at VND36,300.

Thu Duc Water Supply Joint Stock Company (TDW) dipped 4.88 per cent to close at VND15,600.

The VN30 Index - a free-float adjusted, market cap-weighted index of 30 stocks with the highest market value and liquidity on the exchange – edged up 5.3 points, or 1.05 per cent, to end at 509.41. Among its 30 members, 23 stocks strengthened, 3 weakened, and 4 remained unmoved.

Hanoi’s HNX-Index of the smaller bourse in the north jumped 2.83 per cent, or 2.09 points, to close at 75.87 points with 256 winners, 42 losers, and 32 stocks treading water. Around 74.04 million shares changed hands at a total value of VND739.77 billion.

Meanwhile, the UPCoM-Index of unlisted shares revived 0.11 per cent, or 0.04 points, to close at 35.81 points. A total of 244,400 shares changed hands at VND1.4 billion.
