Nation denies steel dump on US market

The Ministry of Industry and Trade's Viet Nam Competition Management Authority (VCA) has affirmed that the country has not dumped carbon steel pipes on the US market.

The VCA quoted a US Department of Commerce (DOC) decision, as saying that big Vietnamese steel pipe exporters including SeAH Steel Vina and Hongyugan Machinery Manufacturing, which accounted for 70 per cent of local exports to the US would receive duties of 0 per cent.

Earlier, DOC chose the companies to be surveyed for dumping products.

Sun Steel JSC, Huu Lien Asia and Hoa Phat Steel, holding a smaller share of the market, would receive a rate of 9.32 per cent. All other Vietnamese exporters and producers accounting for 5 to 10 per cent of steel pipe exports to the US would receive a preliminary dumping margin of around 28 per cent.

A VCA representative said businesses that actively participated in the investigation proved their innocence.

He added that businesses should co-operate with investigating agencies to protect their rights.

DOC sent a delegation to the country to gather information.

The VCA asked steel businesses to provide DOC with all necessary information following its imposing of an anti-dumping duty of nearly 28 per cent on Vietnamese steel pipes

According to the Viet Nam Steel Association, last year the country exported 85,000 tonnes of steel pipes, earning US$89 million. The US alone imported 40,000 tonnes.

The pipes covered in the ruling are used for handling water and other liquids and gases under low pressure in plumbing, heating and cooling systems, amongst others.
