Blue-chip stocks shore up market 

Vietnam’s benchmark VN-Index recovered on December 21 as heavyweight stocks gained ground although losers outnumbered gainers amid rising concerns over inflation after an unexpected hike in power price.

The measure of 302 companies and five mutual funds listed on the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange retrieved 0.56 percent, or 2.05 points, to close at 367.72 points.

Among the index members, 109 increased, 113 decreased, while 85 remained unchanged.

Trading on the city bourse rose by 25 percent in volume, and 22 percent in value over the previous day as 46.46 million shares changed hands at a total value of VND747 billion.

Sacom Development & Investment Corporation Joint Stock Company (SAM) was the most active share in volume with 2.1 million shares changing hands.

The fourth largest listed bank Saigon Thuong Tin Joint Stock Commercial Bank or Sacombank (STB) followed with 1.42 shares.

Na Ri Hamico Mineral Joint Stock Company (KSS) came in third with 1.38 million shares traded.

South Vietnam Container Shipping Joint Stock Company (VSG) and Cadovimex Seafood Import-Export & Processing Joint Stock Company (CAD) both resurrected 5.88 percent to close at VND1,800.

Phuoc Hoa Rubber Joint Stock Company (PHR) resumed its two-day winning streak, gaining 5 percent to close at VND27,300.

Dong Nai Port Joint Stock Company (PDN) climbed for ten consecutive trading sessions, escalating 4.91 percent to VND27,800.

Sao Ta Foods Joint Stock Company (FMC) plunged for four straight days, losing 17.39 percent to close at VND9,500. The company will pay dividends to its current shareholders in cash at a ratio of 15 percent since January 10.

Viky Plastic Joint Stock Company (VKP) crushed 11.11 percent to VND800.

Gia Lai Sugar - Thermal Power Joint Stock Company (SEC) sliced 7.45 percent to finish at VND14,700.

The Hanoi’s HNX-Index of the smaller bourse in the north regained 0.78 percent, or 0.46 points, to close at 59.79 points. Around 24.14 million shares changed hands at a value of VND209.57 billion.

The UPCoM-Index of unlisted shares grew 0.32 percent, or 0.11 points, to 34.21 points at 2:12pm local time. A total of 122,400 shares changed hands at a value of VND987 million.
