PPAP shipping numbers up

Freight shipments through Phnom Penh Autonomous Port, Cambodia’s second largest port, increased more than 30 per cent year-on-year through October, according to official figures.

The PPAP figures showed that 68,427 TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units) were shipped through the facility between January and October of this year, up 30.5 per cent from 52,431 TEUs for the same period in 2010.

Hei Bavy, director-general of Phnom Penh Autonomous Port, said yesterday the increase was the result of an increase in agricultural shipments such rice and rubber, as well as electronics products, construction materials, garment and textiles products and raw materials for the garment industry.

“We believe that it will increase more than expected this year,” he said.

The PPAP expects total freight shipments for the year to reach between 75,000 and 80,000 TEUs, up from 62,256 TEUs in 2010.
