China places huge order with Lao tapioca factory
The KPN Tapioca Factory in Laos has received a new order for 300 tonnes of tapioca per day from a sugar factory in Nanning.
Factory President Mrs Kongphat Thavitham told Vientiane Times yesterday the order was placed by the sugar factory at KPN's booth at the 8th China-Asean Expo about 15 minutes after the expo opene d.
“This is my first time at the expo here in Nanning and I'm very pleased that our company has received this new order,” she said. The sugar factory ordered the tapioca from KPN because it is inexpensive and when processed produces white sugar. The tapioca currently used by the factory is costly and produces sugar that is off-white in colour.
The KPN factory is located in Champassak province and is currently producing about 90 tonnes per day.
“We will be able to supply our new customers by increasing production from 90 to 300 tonnes per day,” Mrs Khongphat said.
The factory opened in 2009 and is the only privately ow ned tapioca starch factory in Laos. The factory's native tapioca starch is a high quality product suitable for use in the food, paper, and adhesive industries. The internationally certified KNP factory consistently produces high quality tapioca starch for its customers.
“We control every step of the production process from nursing the plants to the finished product to ensure it is of the highest quality,” Mrs Khongphat said.
The baking industry uses tapioca starch to make bread and cookies because it can replace wheat flour while maintaining the nutritional value of the food and even improve the quality of bread.
Tapioca is being increasingly used to make candy, chocolate, chewing gum, jellies and medicine, she said. Tapioca starch is also an important ingredient in the production of monosodium glutamate.
The KPN Tapioca Factory is a branch of KPN Pharma, a pharmaceutical company producing more than 65 different medical products including Gold Deer ointment and Lao Star organic tea.
