Laos, Vietnam send strong signal on telecoms cooperation

The Lao Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications and the Vietnamese Ministry of Information and Communications have pledged to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the communications field.

Under the agreement, the two ministries will foster cooperation in telecommunications, postal services, radio frequencies, information technology, Internet domain names, and information security.

The two ministries will develop a long-term and sustainable relationship based on the principles of equality and mutual benefit in the field of posts and communications in accordance with the laws and regulations of each country.

The cooperation will also assist Laos regarding IT work in preparation for the 9th ASEM Summit in 2012, according to a handout at the signing ceremony.

The two sides will identify the basic direction of the cooperation through the exchange of information, experiences, best practices and telecommunications laws, strategies and regulations.

They will also encourage and support further cooperation between the ministries' respective posts and telecom-munications enterprises on the establishment of infrastructure and provision of services.

Major features of the cooperation will be the strengthening and prioritisation of human resources development and support for training programmes in the field of posts and telecommunications.

Under the agreement, the institutes of the two ministries will cooperate on the provision of long and short term training courses, encouraging the exchange of professionals and technicians in the field of research and development of services and new technologies.

The cooperation between the two ministries is in accordance with a broader agreement for support in the field of posts and telecommunications between the governments of Laos and Vietnam.
