A ceremony to mark the occasion was attended by Minister of Industry and Commerce Dr Nam Vinhaket, government officials, businesspeople and customers. The event also marked the company's three year anniversary.

ISO 9001:2008 relates to quality management systems, ISO 14001:2004 environmental management systems and OHSAS 18001 health and safety standards or occupational health and safety zone, according to a press release.

Dr Nam said Petroleum Trading Lao has been operating for only a few years but has invested in building quality management and services with a focus on expansion.

“The company started out as a family business and its success provides an example for other local business operators.”

Company representative Mr Bounthanh Chittavong said the business was established in 2008 with an investment of 75.6 billion kip.

It now operates more than 100 petrol stations in Laos, including stations in remote areas that offer similar prices as those in major cities. “This policy aims to help farmers boost agricultural production while keeping costs low,” Mr Bounthanh said, adding the company plans to open more petrol stations in various areas in the near future.

The company also supplies fuels to projects in the mining, energy, transportation and construction sectors.

It has five fuel storage facilities, all of which meet internationally recognised safety standards.

“We plan to build an additional warehouse in 2012 and also hope to have many more stations with international standard management systems nationwide in the near future,” Mr Bounthanh said.

The company is also involved in several community projects such as sustainable staff building at the Peuan Mit centre.

The company has donated blankets, educational equipment, rice and food to residents of the Centre for Special Disabled People 790 in Vientiane and also provided funds to purchase saplings for distribution on Arbor Day.

“We will be a leader in raising funds to assist the victims of natural disasters in Laos,” Mr Bounthanh said.

Société Générale de Surveillance (also known as SGS) is the world's leading inspection, verification, testing and certification company. It employs more than 67,000 people and operates a network of over 1,250 offices and laboratories around the world.
