Lao garment export sets new record
The volume of Lao garments exporting to the EU market reached over US$100 million in the first half of this year, which was a high hit record.
However the shortage of skilled labourers in this sector is the current barrier that the Government should be coped with.
Vice President of Lao National Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Mr. Onsy Boutsivongsack said on 22 August that the main garment market of Laos are Europe, Japan, Republic of Korea and United States of America despite of tax import payment. This figure compared to the same period rose by US$22.3 million or about 28 per cent.
The main factor leading to the volume export of Lao garment increased in the first haft of this year thanks to the Europes policy on Generalized System of Preferences for original products of least developed countries since 1 January, said Mr. Onsy who is also the President of Lao Garment Industry Association.
The percentage of Lao garment market in the USA accounted for 17 per cent or amount to US$17 million, 3.31 per cent or US$3.3million in Japan, Canada and other countries in the Asia in respectively.
Although the current figure of export is on upward, the skilled labourers, a main factor to drive the Lao garment industry over the past two years decreased to 28,000 from 30,000 labourers.
So the garment factories in Vientiane as well as nationwide have required a large number of employees.
Despite a high value of Lao garment export, it compared to other least developed country, especially Cambodia. Lao garment considered to be the lowest. The Cambodian garment export was over US$3 billion.
The overall this year, the volume of Lao garment export is expected to be reached by US$ 200 million.
