Energy company obtains international standard certification

Electricite du Laos (EDL) was granted the prestigious ISO 9001:2008 international standard quality management system certification by BM Trada Certification Ltd in Vientiane on Monday.

The scope of activities covered by the certification are defined as management of metre reading, billing, collection and fault call centre for electricity distribution for household, commercial and industrial sectors.

“This achievement is all the more significant because EDL has done it in a very short timeframe,” BM Trada representative Mr Ho Yoon Sin said at the ceremony.

EDL Managing Director Mr Khammany Inthirath said EDL had made a commitment on March 8 this year to obtain ISO 9001 certification in accordance with ISO 9001 International Standard requirements.

“The certificate was approved on June 30,” Mr Khammany said.

“June 30 was just under four months later and this is a record of sorts,” Mr Ho said.

Mr Khammany said that in May a team of EDL managerial staff from various departments were selected to undergo an intensive training course to qualify to be internal quality auditors at the company.

The team then conducted company-wide internal audits on May 30-31 to ensure continued suitability of its quality system and its effective implementation, and to ensure compliance with the requirements of ISO 9001.

BM Trada was appointed by EDL to carry out an assessment audit last month and certify that the quality management system of EDL complies with the requirements of ISO 9001:2008.

“We are proud to be among the first few companies certified with the prestigious ISO 9001 international standard for quality management systems in Laos,” Mr Khammany said.

“Today, EDL will be known internationally as a quality power producer and supplier throughout the energy world and I'm confident that EDL will grow and stand tall among the many ISO 9001 certified organisations worldwide,” Mr Ho said.

ISO is short for International Standardisation Organisation and is based in Geneva, Switzerland.

It is responsible for the establishment, upgrading, amendment and revision of requirements for organisations seeking the ISO 9000 series of international standard certification.

ISO 9001 is the most sought after certification, especially for organisations in the business sector.

The latest version of ISO 9001 is the fourth edition and was published in November 2008, thus it is known as ISO 9001:2008.

EDL is a state-owned corporation which owns and operates the country's main electricity generation, transmission and distribution assets in Laos, as well as managing electricity imports and exports.

Early this year, another state-owned enterprise, the Lao State Fuel Company, received ISO-9001:2008 certification in recognition of the company's quality management system from the United Registrar of Systems (Thailand) Limited. The scope of activities covered by the certificate is defined as the import and distribution of fuels and lubricants.

BM Trada stands for British Maritime Timber Research and Development Association.
