S. Koreans eye business opportunities in Laos
Businesses operators from Laos and the Republic of Korea will meet up in Seoul this week to promote business opportunities in Laos, according to the Asean-Korea Centre yesterday.
The centre will host the Investment Seminar on the Lao PDR on June 17 at the Millennium Seoul Hilton, in collaboration with the Lao Ministry of Planning and Investment.
Deputy Director General of the Department of Planning and Investment Mr Manothong Vongsay will deliver a keynote speech at the seminar.
This will be followed by a legal guide to investment in Laos by Deputy Director of the Department of Planning and Investment Mr Phouthasack Souvannasao.
Another presenter, the Vice Governor of the Savan-Seno Special Economic Authority, will discuss investment opportunities in the Savan-Seno Special Economic Zone.
In addition, Director of Kolao Group, Mr Kim Myung Kwan, who runs a Korean company engaging in the manufacture of automobiles, construction and banking, will share his valuable experiences of doing business in Laos.
In the afternoon, one-on-one meetings will be held between Lao and Korean business operators.
In 2010, the two-way trade between Korea and Laos totalled US$130 million, which is 10 times the figure in 1995. Laos, which is located at the centre of the Indochina peninsula, has sustained economic growth of over 7 percent from 2011 to 2015, and aims to accelerate growth to 8 percent annually.
The Asian Development Bank projects Laos' economic growth at 7.7 percent this year.
The Asean-Korea Centre is an international organisation established to promote economic and socio-cultural cooperation between the regional body and S. Korea.
Amid growing interest in Asean food and beverages in the Korean market, an exhibition at the centre aims to inform potential Korean importers and buyers by displaying a wide selection of products, including confectionery, dried fruit and pre-cooked frozen food.
The centre also provides opportunities for business meetings between Asean companies and potential Korean importers and buyers, and facilitates cooking demonstrations and food tasting at the Asean kitchen, located in the Asean Pavilion, as a means to effectively promote the products.
