Experts predict bright future for Lao IT industry
Information technology is good business in Laos and will bring increased job opportunities for the young Lao workforce, according to a survey funded by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
A research team from the Lao ICT Commerce Association (LICA) last week organised a workshop on the ‘Potential and Opportunities of IT Outsourcing for Lao IT Entrepreneurs' to reveal the survey findings on the IT opportunities in Laos.
The survey found that the IT service market in Laos reached US$119 million in 2010 and is predicted to grow 37 percent over the next two years.
It also revealed that nearly 4,000 people are actively working in the IT profession, of which 22 percent are working for IT service providers and the rest are in IT service recipient organisations. The total IT workforce is expected to jump to 5,400 in 2012.
The survey found that IT workers are on average 27 years of age and are earning US$186 to US$403 monthly.
The study also found the biggest problems in the industry are competition between IT service providers and workforce quality.
According to LICA the survey was conducted by collecting data from 30 IT service providers and 122 IT service recipients. Contributors were from government offices, private enterprise, academic institutions and JICA Laos.
