Deputy PM urges northwest to develop faster

Deputy Prime Minister Truong Vinh Trong urged north-west provinces to take drastic actions to develop with fast and sustainable growth while also shortening the development gap with other regions in the country.

Speaking at a conference to review the Northwest Steering Committee's 2010 activities and implement tasks for 2011 in Tuyen Quang Province on Feb. 15, Trong said the region must implement the 11th Party Congress resolution and a Government resolution for the 2011 socio-economic development plan from the very beginning of the year.

Based on these resolutions, the north-west region needed to build action programmes and mobilise its entire political system to fulfil given goals, he said.

Trong also asked the north-west region to continuously speed up economic restructuring, effectively implement a programme to build new rural areas, mobilise a variety of resources to properly implement social welfare policies, and stabilise and improve people's lives, especially among those living in the poorest districts.

He also said the socio-economic development results that had been achieved in the north-west provinces were considerable in the context of the global economic crisis.

Deputy head of the Northwest Steering Committee Dinh Van Cuong told conference participants that the region had posted a GDP growth rate of 12.55 per cent last year, an increase of 3.17 per cent compared with the previous year.

Average GDP per capita was VND11.75 million (US$559), an increase of nearly VND2 million ($95) compared with 2009. The number of poor households reduced to 18.77 per cent last year, a decrease of 3.85 per cent compared with 2009.

Many conference participants said the key to development in the north-west provinces remained infrastructure and human resources. They requested the regional Government to invest properly in these two areas.

Deputy Director of the Government Office Van Trong Ly said the region needed to mobilise funds from organisations and individuals from all walks of life to be used in addition to funds from the State budget.

Cuong pledged to closely implement the resolutions to achieve the regional goals this year.
