Chinese builders seek Vietnamese partners

China held a conference on the construction industry in Ha Noi last week to enhance trade with Viet Nam.

Eleven Chinese and more than 60 Vietnamese businesses were represented at the Conference on Doors, Windows, Curtain Walls and Hardware Fittings and Construction Materials.

Liu Zhe, Vice Chairman of the China Construction Metal Structure Association, told participants he hoped the conference would promote technical skills, quality and economic efficiency in the Vietnamese building industry and help develop trademarks and services in the two counties.

Hu Soujin, Chinese Economic and Commercial Counsellor to Viet Nam, said bilateral trade between the two countries had great potential because of the two countries' locations in the world.

Pham Khanh Toan, from the Viet Nam's Ministry of Construction, welcomed trade promotion activities organised by Chinese partners, which he said would create business opportunities for China and Viet Nam and enhance investment co-operation.

Toan added that the Vietnamese construction materials industry not only met domestic demand but was also active in terms of exports as well.

Between 2000-10, the industry invested in building 70 cement projects with a total design capacity of 70.59 million tonnes. To date, 55 cement producers have gone into operation with a production capacity of 60.3 million tonnes per year.

Ceramic products for the construction sector has a production capacity of 350 million square metres a year. Sanitary wares have a designed capacity of 9.5 million units per year, while glass production reached 120 million square metres a year.

Apart from importing raw materials, Viet Nam also imported machinery and other equipment from mainland China, Taiwan, Germany, Spain, Japan and ASEAN countries. Of these, China is the biggest partner, accounting for more than 40 per cent of the Viet Nam's total import turnover in the construction sector.

Hoang Van Huan, Vice Chairman of the Viet Nam Foreign Investment Enterprises Association, said China had invested US$3.17 billion in 741 projects in Viet Nam. China ranked 14th out of 91 countries and territories investing in the country, he said. Chinese investment mainly focused on the processing and manufacturing industries and was worth $2.2 billion. It has also invested $383 million in real estate and $240 million in the construction industry.

In the first eight months of this year, imports from China reached $12.5 billion – a year-on-year increase of 29 per cent.

Viet Nam's export turnover with China in the first eight months stood at more than $4 billion. Main exports included rubber, cassava, fisheries products and cashews.
