HCMC stocks for Tet fever, clothes up 50%
Food, drinks, clothes and other necessary items are being stocked in huge numbers to meet surging demand for the upcoming Tet, the biggest festival in Vietnam falling in February next year.
Kevin Tho told Tuoi Tre his company is importing popular foodstuffs like chicken wings, thighs, and frozen beefsteak to anticipate a surge in demand in the next few weeks.
Demands for frozen food often peak at year’s end, he said.
Imports of clothing items have also risen by 40-50 percent, other importers said.
“I imported 4,000 T-shirts and pairs of jeans from Thailand, China and the Philippines last month. They sell very well so I will seek more in the coming days,” Vu Thi Van, an apparel seller in District 5, said.
Alcoholic beverages and soft drinks are also coming in large numbers. Some revealed they had even lifted imports up by 2-3 times compared to three months ago.
According to local customs, alcohol and beer imports are 50-55 percent higher than last year’s period.
Specifically, foodstuffs from Japan and Korea have made good sales at Vietnamese supermarkets even though they are priced 3-4 times higher than their local counterparts.
Local retail outlet Maximark, for instance, offers Korean instant noodle packets at 8-10 times more expensive than Vietnamese ones but they are still sold well.
This increase in imports is facilitated by tax reduction and free trade agreements taking effect, insiders explained.
